Thermodynamics is the study of heat, energy, and work. It helps explain how energy is transferred and transformed in physical and chemical systems. For first-year physics students, the subject introduces essential laws that govern all natural processes.

The first law of thermodynamics is a statement of energy conservation. It says that the change in internal energy of a system is equal to the heat added to the system minus the work done by the system. This can be written as ΔU = Q – W. The law implies that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only converted from one form to another.

The second law of thermodynamics introduces the concept of entropy and the direction of natural processes. It states that in any energy transfer, the total entropy of a closed system always increases or remains constant; it never decreases spontaneously. This explains why heat flows from hot to cold objects and why certain processes, like the spontaneous cooling of a cup of tea, are irreversible.

Thermodynamics links microscopic particle behavior to macroscopic observations such as temperature and pressure. It plays a central role in engines, refrigerators, and even biological systems. A solid understanding of thermodynamic principles provides students with the tools to analyze energy efficiency, understand phase changes, and explore the limits of physical systems.
